• Foreign Direct Investment Continues to Grow
Foreign direct investment in Costa Rica shot up 71% IN 2006, according to a new study released by the U.N. Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
Known as the World Investment Report 2007, the study found that foreigners directly invested $1.47 billion in Costa Rica last year.

• AyA Says Garabito Water Plant On Track
Garabito is on schedule to get a new potable water treatment plant early next year, Costa Rica’s Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers, has announced.
Plans for the property where the plant is to be installed, as well as the distribution network, are “updated and ready,” according to a statement by the Instituto Costarricense de Aquaductos y Alcantarillados (or AyA).
The new treatment plant should be ready by February, the AyA said, and will be capable of pumping 60 liters per second during the rainy season and 40 liters per second in the dry season.

Dominican Republic withdrew its bid for a seat in the United Nations Security Council, paving the way for Costa Rica to occupy the post, declaring it was in defense of the unity and solidarity of Latin America and the Caribbean.
"The Unity of Latin America and the Caribbean is first of all and more than ever in a world riddled with difficulties", acting Dominican ambassador Enriquillo A. del Rosario Ceballos expressed when speaking at the plenary of the General Assembly.

• “Yes” Victory Likely in Costa Rica CAFTA Referendum
President Oscar Arias and other supporters of the Central American Free-Trade Agreement with the United States (CAFTA) declared victory last night as results rolled in from a popular referendum, showing a likely win for the “yes” vote.
Nationwide, with 95% of votes counted, 51.6% of voters chose in favor of the controversial trade pact, while 48.4% voted against it. About 60% of eligible voters turned out yesterday, exceeding the necessary 40% necessary for the vote to be binding.
